Clik here to view. Now that Halloween is over it’s nice to reflect on some of the best creative marketing feats.
Earlier this month, the marketing team for the new film adaptation of Carrie staged a telekinetic happening in a New York coffee shop. Although the initial event was certainly shocking to the unsuspecting coffee-drinkers, this marketing campaign’s real success turned out to be in its online spread.
The YouTube video currently has over 46 million views. The most obvious takeaway from this is to make sure to film any marketing events you have planned. Even if it is nowhere near this scale, you can still multiply your audience simply by uploading footage to YouTube after the event.
In addition to taking advantage of the wider audience now available through sites like YouTube, the team behind Carrie also took advantage of releasing their film near Halloween. Movies like Mercy, Insidious 2, and The Conjuring join Carrie in taking advantage of the increased interest in horror films during October this year. Of these, Carrie released the closest to Halloween. Plus, with names like Stephen King and Julianne Moore attached to it plus the cult success of the first film, Carrie had a lot going for it already. This added dose of creative marketing was a nice touch on a film that could have rested on its laurels.
If you are into classic films, you may also know that this harkens back to the somewhat hokey, but also very effective, marketing style of filmmakers like William Castle and Alfred Hitchcock. Horror films have always walked the line between serious scare and glorying in the gimmick. This allows them to glory in marketing strategies like this that might also border on the gimmicky.
While gimmicky might not work in all marketing, keeping strategies different, creative, and timely can still apply. With many more holidays quickly approaching, never underestimate tieing your marketing efforts into upcoming holidays or events.
Put yourself out there, try something new…stay creative, edgy and don’t forget to keep the camera handy!
